10 Make-up Essentials for your 30s

After many years of misusing cosmetics and abusing my purse strings, I’ve come to refine my make-up routine and accepted the school of less is more. I used to experiment with colours and do lots of crazy things with wild eyeshadows and super bright (read green) eyeliner even to work. Eventually, my office look became a pared down 5-minute morning thing because you know… It’s the morning! I’d keep extra make-up in my drawers at work for occasions that required more of me.

I don’t think that expensive make-up is necessarily better all the time and I don’t think it’s important to load your face with too much junk. Let it breathe!!! It’ll thank you! Also, I don’t like clutter, so having 10 types of concealers, 15 tubes of mascara, 20 lipsticks etc just seems kinda excessive to me.

IMG_5692

As I approach my 40s, I accept that my eyelids are a bit droopier, my double chins are never going away and I’ll never have baby smooth skin again. While I am not against cosmetic surgery, I feel like it’s not necessary just yet.

So what then?

Here is my list of 10 essential items to improve on the canvas nature has provided:

1. CC cream or BB cream with SPF
In lieu of foundation which I think is unnecessary for most people on most days, I think a CC (complexion corrector) or BB (blemish balm) cream will do just to even out skintone. Your own skin will still shine through and it’ll look more natural. It won’t cover all your flaws but you don’t want to cover everything, including the “good parts” of your skin.

2. Concealer
What the CC or BB cream didn’t cover, this will. This goes over and not under. Use sparingly. Mostly under eyes and parts where you have blemishes – like last week’s zit scars. Beware of being over zealous with the application as it will show up fine lines through caking!

3. Loose powder or light compact powder
Not a 2-way cake, please! Those are way to cakey and belong in the 80s! Just something light and sheer to help set your make-up after you’ve put it on and also for touch-ups when there’s shine. I prefer a compact powder because of the convenience even though other people think loose powder with a big brush gives a more natural finish.

4. A natural blusher
Depending on your skin colour and undertones, don’t pick something too bright or bronzy. While the contouring thing is popular now, unless you want to spend time blending different shades, stick with the colour closest to when your cheeks are flushed – not how you think you want your cheeks to look when they are flushed or how a colour looks on another person’s cheeks.

5. Neutral coloured eyeshadow
Again this depends on your natural skin colour and can range from ivory to peach to browns. It should be a few shades lighter than the skin on the rest of your face and when dusted over your eyelids, will help your eyeliner stay and your eyes look more alert!

6 & 7. Eyeliner and Mascara
I think that with age, our eyes tend not to be as perky and bright as before. While not absolute, the eyeliner and mascara combo when sparingly used, enhances the peepers by defining them. Also when eyeliner is not used in conjunction with a mascara, I see gaps at the lash line and it irritates me. I like it seamless and I always go with black for both!

8. Eyebrow pencil, shadow or gel
Choose a shade slightly lighter than your hair colour. Defined brows pull together a look but watch those arches! Don’t go too thin or too extreme! I prefer a pencil because of better control though a gel is supposed to be more natural.

9. Highlighter
Instead of some crazy 10-brush, 3 tone shading and contouring kit, I use a very simple technique – just sparkly white eyeshadow applied with my pinky finger in 3 areas. I dab and blend (with a clean finger) in the inner corners of my eyelids, the bridge of my nose and a small triangle between the outer corner of my cheekbones and under my eyes.

10. Tinted lip balm
I don’t wear lipstick everyday. When I do, I lean towards a bright orangey red and richly pigmented pinks. On regular days though, I want a hint of colour so that I don’t look sickly. Pick a colour that is similar to when your lips burn from eating spicy food. Trust me, it works! A lip balm is great even for humid climates because with age, the fine lines on your lips start getting deeper so this is the best time to get into the habit of gently exfoliating and nourishing it to keep them puckers supple!

What do you normally use in your everyday make-up routine? What gives your face that glow without looking too made-up?

Buy SEPHORA online through ZALORA Singapore now!

20140507-105125.jpg

Hey Singapore pals! Gone are the days where you have to stock up at your overseas Sephora store! I know that their signature black & white stores have hit the shores of Singapore a while now but guess what? You can now shop Sephora online through your favourite multi-label Singapore-based website, Zalora!

I used to love going into stores and touching the merchandise, testing it out and all. But once that’s done, I save the hassle by buying online. It gives me the freedom to buy something I already know I want, without contending with queues and travelling to an actual, physical store. Have you ever gone to a store only to find out that they do not have physical stocks of the items you want? ARGH! How annoying! Also, online shopping these days come with the perks of user reviews. Instead of going to a store, looking at the advertising copy on the product and second-guessing its actual benefits, I would much rather click on the product listing in the comfort of my seat/bed at home, search for user reviews and hit ADD TO CART!

And if you need more reasons to check out Sephora at Zalora, how about easy returns and free local shipping for orders over SGD40? Forget expensive and complex international shipping!

My Stuff: Everyday Make-Up July 2013

20130714-111743.jpg

This is what I use on an average day for my make-up, no make-up look. Yeah it looks like I use a lot of stuff just to make myself look clean-faced with minimal make-up. It’s true. And under the cosmetics, I have my toner and sunblock too!

So this came up because my pal Isis asked me about my eyeliner last week. I said I’ll do a post to list down what I use since the last time I did one was about a year ago. I use a really random mix lot so it’s mostly affordable and easily available for most people.

Here’s my list of what I’m using for my everyday face, in order of application:

1. MAC Studio Finish Concealer SPH 35FPS NC20

This has been my go-to concealer for a long time. It covers well and is in the right shade for me.

2. BAVIPHAT Secret Recipe BB Magic Girls PLUS BB CREAM Fresh for Oily Skin SPF30/PA++

I discovered this on my sister’s dresser and used it once. Fell in love with what it does for my skin and bought a tube for myself off eBay. I use this very sparingly and a small pea sized drop spreads easily to cover my entire face. I try not to use a foundation when I don’t need it. It gives my skin a chance to breathe and I do notice that as I get older, foundation can be unflattering as it accentuates my large pores and fine lines. But I do have uneven skin tone that’s starting to look sallow so at the very least, I need a BB cream to even it out.

3. MAC Select Sheer/Pressed powder NC 25

I’ve been using this for at least 10 years now and sometimes I do get darker when I stay out in the sun for a few days in a row but not enough for me to want to purchase a shade darker. Great coverage, matches my skin colour, yet doesn’t look too heavy for me. I love pressed powders for their convenience. I can’t be bothered with big brushes and loose powder even if people say it looks more “natural”. Because I don’t use foundation, I think it’s okay to be a little more heavy handed with a pressed powder.

4. BIOTHERM Play On Velvet Eye Shadow Perfect Wear 600

This was something that my sister didn’t want. It works for me and helps even out the darker colour around my eyes. Most times, it doesn’t even look like I have eye shadow on. Also, sometimes I make mistakes and smudge my eyeliner or make small stains with my mascara, I just go over the tainted area with a few strokes of this and it disappears. Or so I think.

5. SILKY GIRL Natural Brow Pencil 02 Dark Brown

My eyebrows are the ultimate crap. What’s with the hair on my head and my eyebrows? Years of torture plucking and one rather uneven eyebrow embroidery job has left me with sparse and uneven eyebrows. Luckily, I wear bangs and on most days, my eyebrow pencil does the job well enough that nobody notices. I like my brows darker as it frames my face and perks me up. I like the shade of this pencil, it’s easily available at the drugstores and it’s only a few bucks!

6. MAYBELLINE Hyper Sharp Liner

Easily the best eyeliner I’ve ever used. I’ve since bought over 10 of these! It’s like a firm felt marker with a fine tip. Very easy to use and highly pigmented. Be careful on the first 5-6 uses as it’s usually very wet and takes a while to dry.

7. MAYBELLINE The MAGNUM Volum’ Express Ultracomb Waterproof

All the black MAYBELLINE waterproof mascaras are good! I use them interchangeably especially when there is a discounted item. I like this because it’s a little comb and brushes out each eye lash.

8. MAC Well Dressed Satin Powder Blush

A light pink blush, none too overboard. I use this for day and tend to go for a dusky rose pink at night.

9. GUERLAIN Meteorites Perles Illuminating Powder – Pure Radiance 01 Teint Rose

Bought this last year at the airport duty free shop on my way back from Melbourne, Australia. It comes as a set of 2. This jar has green, white, yellow, purple and pink. The other jar which I left in Las Vegas, is mostly pink and white. I don’t know what the difference is honestly, but I use it everyday now. I swirl the brush into the jar of beads and then brush in rotating motion over my cheekbones just under my eyes, on the tip of my nose and chin. It seems to do the trick of deflecting light and making my skin less old in pictures. I notice how much more haggard and dull my skin is when I’m not using it.

10. BENEFIT Dandelion Ultra Plush lip gloss

This smells good and gives my lips this light dewy tint. Sometimes I just use it alone but most days this goes under my lipstick.

11. MAC CREMESHEEN Speed Dial

A creamy pink lipstick which is great everyday. For pictures though, I sometimes go over this colour with a deeper hot pink so that it would perk up my face. But otherwise Speed Dial is a great “natural” go to colour for me.

So what do you use? Is your everyday face as complicated? I spend about 10-12 minutes on my face – including toner and sunblock. Is that too long? How long do you take?

Today in evacuee-fashion. Sorry, I kid. Anyway I read on Facebook that if you don’t make at least 1 haze joke, you’re not Singaporean. I find it really strange how Indonesian forest fires (the ones deliberately caused by unscrupulous cost-saving corporations) are treated as a part of life here. I overheard some people commenting how the haze “came earlier this year”.

Seriously though last night was really bad, the skies have been a weird colour since PSI levels hit 321 (hazardous). I believe visibility is not beyond 1km. The air smells acrid and I’ve been feeling sick ever since. Lucky for me, my company issued us N95 masks from 3M. These masks are really comfortable compared to the other flat paper types I’ve worn in the past. The mask forms a cup around your mouth and nose and there is a metal strip around the nose area for you to form-fit, hence forming a tighter seal (not completely air-tight though). You can still move your lips and the mask does not press down on your nose or mouth.

Anyway, haze or not, a cardigan is good to have. This is a piece called Jersey Waterfall Cardigan sponsored by FLOW and while it’s described as Teal, even my colleagues tell me it looks green. If you’ve ever had double-headed colour pencils, this is the green directly opposite the chrome yellow. Again, I’m not sure why my iPhone is not capturing the colour that I see.

Other than that, the supposed long sleeves are not. They are more 3/4 sleeves and if you’re regular height (i.e. 1.60m upwards) you will find it a little too short. Other than that, it is as described – a generous fit. I love it. It’s so soft and comfortable! Cardigans are great for transitioning in strange weather conditions – hot outdoors, cold air-conditioning indoors. Or when travelling – too cold airplanes, too hot climates? I love cardigans for layering as it can immediately jazz up a plain boring outfit and the waterfall side panels (shorter at the back), does lend some interesting detail.

What I’m wearing today:

Top: Grey HELLO KITTY tank top from FAITH21 (former Forever21)

Outerwear: Teal Jersey Waterfall Cardigan by FLOW

Accessories: Black dangling earrings from thestreetsofTaipei; Black weave faux leather belt from thestreetsofBangkok

Rants & Raves: Our 2012 Christmas Swop

In 2010, my pal Juanita sent me a box of presents from Switzerland. Her in-laws lovingly carried the package back to Singapore for her. She sent me 12 things in the package and numbered them. I was allowed to open only in sequence, 1 a day. It was quite a fun exercise and I loved it so much. You can read about it here (https://wastedfashion.wordpress.com/2010/12/09/12-days-of-christmas-gifting/)

After we did the JuanitaTortilla Birthday Giveaway, we had so much fun that we wanted to organise another. This time, it’ll be open to all bloggers and EVERYONE who participates will get something! We named it the 12 Days of Christmas Swop and we’d like everyone to participate! Male, female, young and old!

Essentially, you’ll need to be a blogger (sorry for the others), sign up and we’ll use a randomiser to pair you up, you make/buy/find 12 different gifts (with a total value of at least USD25) suitable for your partner (you should learn more about them from their blog), and post them by 17 November 2012 so that they will get their package in time (12 days before Christmas). Then we all blog about our experiences! Click HERE for more details!

There are some girly things and some generic things so it might be appropriate for anyone. Do these items interest you? Join this swop! Maybe you’ll be my partner and they’ll be yours!

My Stuff: Crazy Pink Lipstick Lady

I have been using crazy pink lippies for a long time now and whilst I often go for a nude look, when I do pink lipstick, I go all the way out! Hot Pink, fuchsia, neon pink, call it what you want. Here’s my expanded collection (thanks to my friends who gave me fab birthday pressies!)

20120930-083647.jpg

20120930-083653.jpg

20120930-083700.jpg

(L to R) L’Oreal Color Riche 285 Pink Fever, Clarins Rouge Prodige 102 Pink Paradise, MAC Glaze Big Bow, Dior Addict High Shine 864 Sketch Pink, Estee Lauder Signature Hydra Lustre Lipstick SIG 52 Brilliant Pink, MAC Satin Hollywood Nights, MAC Viva Glam Satin Nicki, MAC Satin Pink Nouveau, MAC Sheen Supreme Insanely It. I tried swatching and I’m not quite sure what to do. Anyway, I’m an NC25.

My sister gave me the MAC Hollywood Nights (from the Heatherette collection) a long time ago and I have been using it sparingly. It’s a gorgeous pink with purple undertones. The one that’s about to be gone is Big Bow from MAC’s Hello Kitty collection. I use it a lot because of the shimmer particles.

The ones that I use most often these days are L’Oreal Color Riche and the Clarins Rouge Prodige though they both leave lipstick prints all over my things (can get quite messy). But I have to say I still really love my Clarins one because Paradise Pink is such an awesome bubble-gum pink!

I think my least favourite is the Dior Addict one. Firstly, the packaging doesn’t stand. Secondly, it’s so light! I understand it’s supposed to be translucent but OMG… I have to coat it several times just to get colour.

Rydwan and Malcolm got me the MAC Insanely It! for my birthday and it’s really very creamy! My new favourite is a toss-up between that and Sian Eng’s gift of Estee Lauder’s Brilliant Pink. In terms of the texture and colour of Brilliant Pink it’s my absolute favourite amongst all but I don’t like the packaging. The gilded gold is too fancy for a common everyday office lady like me! HAHA!

Yesterday, I traded in my DBS credit card points for 2x$20 MAC vouchers to offset the cost of the Viva Glam Nicki and Pink Nouveau. I think I’m going to trade in my 6 empty MAC containers for another 1 later! Free lipsticks are great!
