My first Halloween in the United States came and went. As 31st October was a Thursday, it happened without much fanfare either. I reckon it’ll be more exciting in the next 3 years to come – not school nights. The kids can come out earlier and maybe stay out later. Also, we’d have a little more money and time to prepare our decor.
We spent a total of $20 for Halloween this year. This included the candy, a container for the candy, some minimalistic decor we had at our steps, leading up to our front door and some fairy lights (just so that they know we’re in session and the Happ house is giving out candy). I cleaned the decorations and kept them properly in hope that we can re-use them again for another few years while we add on to our collection.
T said prior to me moving in, he neither had the motivation nor purpose to decorate, so we started from scratch this year. I think this is part of the fun of building a home together. We get to fill the half-empty house. Just me moving here in the last few months, I’ve already added a lot of furniture and household appliances (some I purchased while still living in Singapore, just because I wanted to have them when I visited and some were bought with my birthday gift cards from friends and family).
Next year, I want to start decorating earlier and even if we had more money, I’d like to challenge myself not to spend more than $20 every year. I’m not very crafty with the DIY-ing, so if you have any ideas on keeping decorating costs down, do share!
Also, knowing that we had about 30 kids come by, I think I’ll put together handmade treat bags of 5 to 6 assorted candy (even some Asian ones that I love – Super Lemon, White Rabbit Milk Candy and maybe Haw Flakes).
How was YOUR Halloween?
I would love to be in the USA one Halloween, it seems like its so much fun over there. Some people celebrate it here, but its not really a big deal. Perhaps I should come and visit you for Halloween one year and we can DIY up a whole lot of Halloween good times 😀
We add to our collection of decorations after holidays, when it’s all on sale. Also, dumpster diving! Our best haul ever was a whole bunch of Halloween themed stuff from Kmart.
I’m glad you enjoyed your first Halloween here!!
Halloween isn’t a massive deal in the UK but there are always a few parties and I had two this year. I always try to have a really scary costume that I have to spend very little on. It’s amazing what you can do with make-up 🙂
i’m excited about your “new life”
i’m sure you’ll do great though
Thanks Aida!!! I hope so! It’s one thing to visit for a short while and another to be here long term
